Car Overheating: What to Do Immediately

If your temperature gauge spikes or a warning light comes on, pull over to a safe spot as soon as possible and shut off the engine. Driving even a short distance while overheating can warp the cylinder head or crack the engine block.

Why overheating is serious

Your engine runs at roughly 195 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit under normal conditions. The cooling system keeps it in that range by circulating coolant through the engine block, into the radiator, and back again. When something in that loop fails, temperatures climb fast. Sustained overheating can damage head gaskets, warp metal components, and turn a manageable repair into a major one.

In the Plano and North Texas area, summer surface temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees. That ambient heat puts extra strain on every part of the cooling system, which means problems that might go unnoticed in cooler climates can surface quickly here.

What to do step by step

1. Pull over safely

Find a parking lot, side street, or wide shoulder. Turn on your hazard lights and get out of moving traffic. Do not try to push through to the next exit or your driveway.

2. Shut off the engine

Leaving the engine running, even at idle, continues to generate heat. Turn the key off and let it sit.

3. Do not open the radiator cap

The cooling system is pressurized when hot. Removing the cap can release a burst of boiling coolant and steam that causes severe burns. Wait at least 30 minutes before touching it.

4. Pop the hood from inside the car

Opening the hood helps heat escape, but use the interior release lever rather than reaching into the engine bay. Let things cool down before inspecting anything.

5. Check the coolant level once the engine is cool

After at least 30 minutes, carefully open the coolant reservoir (the translucent overflow tank, not the radiator cap). If the level is well below the minimum line, a leak or consumption issue is likely.

6. Add coolant or water if you have it

If you carry a jug of 50/50 coolant mix or even plain water, topping off the reservoir may let you drive a short distance to a shop. This is a temporary measure, not a fix.

7. Decide whether to drive or call for a tow

If the gauge returns to normal after topping off and the engine starts cleanly, you may be able to drive a short distance at low speed while watching the gauge closely. If the temperature climbs again, pull over and call for a tow. Driving an overheating vehicle risks thousands of dollars in additional damage.

Common causes of overheating

Low coolant

A slow leak from a hose, the radiator, or the water pump can gradually drain the system. Many drivers do not check coolant levels regularly, so the first sign of a leak is often the temperature gauge spiking during a hot afternoon commute.

Failed thermostat

The thermostat is a valve that opens to let coolant flow once the engine reaches operating temperature. When it sticks closed, coolant stays trapped and the engine overheats quickly. This is one of the more affordable repairs in the cooling system.

Worn or broken water pump

The water pump circulates coolant through the entire loop. A failing pump may leak from its weep hole or stop spinning effectively, both of which reduce flow and cause temperatures to rise.

Cooling fan failure

Electric cooling fans pull air through the radiator when the vehicle is stopped or moving slowly. If the fan motor, relay, or temperature sensor fails, airflow drops and the engine overheats in stop-and-go traffic, which is common on US-75 and the Dallas North Tollway during rush hour.

Clogged radiator

Over years of use, mineral deposits and debris can build up inside the radiator, reducing its ability to transfer heat. A radiator flush on the schedule recommended in your owner’s manual helps prevent this.

Head gasket leak

A blown head gasket allows combustion gases to enter the cooling system or lets coolant leak into the cylinders. Signs include white exhaust smoke, milky residue on the oil cap, or bubbles in the coolant reservoir. This is the most expensive common cause and usually the result of driving too long while overheated.

How to reduce the risk

  • Check your coolant level once a month, especially before summer.
  • Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual for coolant flushes and belt replacements.
  • Watch your temperature gauge during slow traffic on hot days.
  • Keep a gallon of premixed coolant in the trunk during summer months.
  • Address small leaks early. A damp spot under the car or a faint sweet smell near the hood is worth investigating before it becomes a roadside breakdown.

When to get it checked

A single overheat episode, even if the car seems fine afterward, is worth having inspected. Damage to gaskets and seals is not always visible from the outside, and catching a small leak or a sticking thermostat now prevents a repeat event later. If your vehicle has overheated more than once, or if you notice the gauge creeping higher than usual during your regular commute, a cooling system inspection can identify the root cause before it leads to engine damage.
