Grinding Brakes: What to Do

If your brakes are grinding, stop driving as soon as you safely can. Grinding usually means the brake pads are worn through and metal is contacting metal, which damages your rotors and reduces stopping power.

What causes brakes to grind

Brake grinding happens when the friction material on your brake pads wears down to the metal backing plate. When you press the pedal, that bare metal scrapes directly against the brake rotor. The result is a harsh, metallic grinding noise and significantly reduced braking performance.

Several things can cause or accelerate this problem:

  • Worn brake pads. This is the most common cause. Pads wear down over time through normal use, and eventually the friction material is gone.
  • Stuck caliper. A caliper that does not release properly keeps the pad pressed against the rotor constantly, wearing it down much faster than normal.
  • Road debris. Small rocks, gravel, or other debris can get lodged between the pad and rotor, creating a grinding sound even when the pads still have life left.
  • Rust buildup. If your car sits for several days without being driven, a thin layer of rust can form on the rotors. This usually scrubs off within the first few stops and is not a concern. However, heavy rust from extended sitting can cause persistent noise.
  • Low-quality brake pads. Cheap pads with less friction material wear out faster and may contain harder compounds that are noisier from the start.

In the Plano area, summer heat plays a role too. Sustained temperatures above 100 degrees put extra thermal stress on brake components, and stop-and-go traffic on US-75 or the Dallas North Tollway compounds the effect.

Grinding vs. squealing: what the sounds mean

Not all brake noises are equally urgent. Understanding the difference helps you decide how quickly to act.

High-pitched squeal

A high-pitched squeal when braking is often the wear indicator doing its job. Most brake pads have a small metal tab that contacts the rotor when the pads get thin. This is a built-in warning system telling you it is time to schedule a pad replacement. At this stage, you typically have some driving time left, but you should not ignore it for more than a week or two.

Metallic grinding

A low, harsh grinding sound is more serious. This usually means the pads are completely worn and metal is grinding against metal. Every mile you drive like this causes additional damage to the rotors, which turns a straightforward pad replacement into a more expensive rotor resurfacing or replacement job.

Grinding only when turning

If the grinding happens mainly when you turn, the issue may be a worn wheel bearing rather than the brakes themselves. A failing bearing creates a growling or grinding noise that changes with vehicle speed and steering direction.

What to do right now

If you hear grinding when you brake, here is what to do:

  1. Reduce your speed. Drive more slowly and leave extra following distance so you can brake gradually rather than suddenly.
  2. Avoid heavy braking. Hard stops generate more heat and accelerate damage to already compromised components.
  3. Do not drive on the highway if the grinding is severe. High-speed stops with metal-on-metal contact are dangerous. Stick to surface streets until you can get the car inspected.
  4. Schedule an inspection within a day or two. If the grinding is constant and loud, have it looked at the same day.

Do not assume the noise will go away on its own. Aside from the light rust scenario mentioned above, brake grinding only gets worse with time.

What the repair usually involves

The specific repair depends on how much damage has occurred:

  • Pad replacement only. If you caught the problem early, new pads may be all you need. This is the least expensive fix.
  • Pad and rotor resurfacing. If the rotors have minor grooves or scoring from brief metal-on-metal contact, a technician can resurface them to restore a smooth braking surface. Not all rotors can be resurfaced; if they are too thin, they need replacement.
  • Pad and rotor replacement. Extended grinding often damages rotors beyond resurfacing. In this case, both pads and rotors are replaced together.
  • Caliper repair or replacement. If a stuck caliper caused the uneven wear, it needs to be addressed too, or the new pads will wear out prematurely.

A standard brake inspection will identify which of these applies to your situation.

How to make your brake pads last longer

North Texas driving conditions are tough on brakes, but a few habits help extend pad life:

  • Coast before braking. Lift off the gas early when approaching a red light or stop sign and let the car slow naturally before applying the brakes.
  • Maintain following distance. Tailgating forces constant braking. A three-second gap at highway speeds reduces unnecessary brake use significantly.
  • Avoid riding the brakes on hills. Downshift to a lower gear on long descents to let the engine help slow the car.
  • Get regular inspections. Having the brake system checked during routine oil changes or tire rotations catches wear early, before it becomes grinding.
