Transmission Slipping? What It Means, What It Costs, and When to Act

By the Marlow Automotive service team · Reviewed by our drivetrain technicians · Updated July 2026. Transmission diagnostics and repair in Plano since 2002.

The short answer: "slipping" — RPMs climbing without acceleration, delayed or harsh shifts, a shudder under load — means your transmission isn't holding the gear it's in. Caught early, it's often a fluid service or an external repair. Ignored for months, it becomes internal damage. The difference is thousands of dollars, which is why acting on the first symptom matters more with transmissions than with almost anything else on your car.

What does a slipping transmission feel like?

  • Engine revs rise but the car doesn't pull — especially merging onto US-75 or the George Bush.
  • Shifts arrive late, slam in hard, or the car "hunts" between gears.
  • A shudder or flare around 35–45 mph, often first noticed towing or in summer heat.
  • A burnt smell from fluid that has overheated past its service life.

Why does it happen?

Automatic transmissions transmit power through fluid pressure and friction clutches. When fluid is old, low, or burnt — and Texas heat ages it fast — pressure drops and clutches slip. Every mile of slipping generates more heat, which degrades the fluid further. That feedback loop is why a transmission that "just started acting up" can fail within a season.

What it costs: the honest ladder

  • Fluid service — if the fluid is degraded but the clutches are healthy, a proper service often restores normal shifting. A few hundred dollars.
  • External repairs — solenoids, sensors, cooler lines, or a leak. Commonly in the several-hundred to low-four-figure range depending on the vehicle.
  • Internal repair or replacement — once clutches are burnt, the unit comes apart or gets replaced. This is the multi-thousand-dollar outcome early action avoids.

We diagnose before we quote — a proper transmission diagnostic with a scan, fluid evaluation, and road test tells us which rung of that ladder you're actually on. No guessing, no worst-case-first quotes.

The one mistake to avoid

Don't keep driving "to see if it gets better." It won't — heat damage is cumulative and irreversible. And don't let anyone quote a rebuild without showing you evidence. Our estimates come with the scan data and fluid condition documented, and customers regularly tell us (in the reviews behind our 4.9 Google rating) that we beat dealership quotes on the identical repair — with a stronger warranty: 2 years / 24,000 miles on qualifying repairs, parts and labor, in writing.
